Summary

The acclaimed artist Brom brilliantly displays his multiple extraordinary talents in The Child Thief—a spellbinding re-imagining of the beloved Peter Pan story that carries readers through the perilous mist separating our world from the realm of Faerie。 As Gregory Maguire did with his New York Times bestselling Wicked novels, Brom takes a classic children’s tale and turns it inside-out, painting a Neverland that, like Maguire’s Oz, is darker, richer, more complex than innocent world J。M。 Barrie originally conceived。 An ingeniously executed literary feat, illustrated with Brom’s sumptuous artwork, The Child Thief is contemporary fantasy at its finest—casting Peter Pan, the Lost Boys, even Captain Hook and his crew in a breathtaking new light。

This story is a topsy-turvy saga which feels like the reader gets to decide who is the villain (minus one very obvious villian) and who's the hero。 Every time you think you figured out how it will end, the plot twists just enough for you to be right but also wrong。 This story is a topsy-turvy saga which feels like the reader gets to decide who is the villain (minus one very obvious villian) and who's the hero。 Every time you think you figured out how it will end, the plot twists just enough for you to be right but also wrong。 。。。more

Thoroughly enjoyed this despite its flaws。 Peter Pan as a pied piper is a genius idea, and I wish I had come up with it myself! The story was unpredictable in a fun way。 The character development was good for the most part。 I dug the Lord of the Flies-esque interactions between this world's Lost Boys。 Peter was morally grey and well drawn。 I am also a sucker for the brand of fantasy and mysticism that is center in this。 Pixies and changelings and witches, oh my!

I’ve never been more unsure of how to rate a book in my life。 I really don’t know how I feel about this one。The writing itself was simultaneously good and bad? The author’s syntax is artful and it does have a lyrical quality to it but there were also some pretty major rookie mistakes that I don’t think I’ve ever seen in a traditionally published, fairly well-known novel。 Things like the POV of one scene being established as, for example, Peter, and then switching to, for example, Tanngnost for a I’ve never been more unsure of how to rate a book in my life。 I really don’t know how I feel about this one。The writing itself was simultaneously good and bad? The author’s syntax is artful and it does have a lyrical quality to it but there were also some pretty major rookie mistakes that I don’t think I’ve ever seen in a traditionally published, fairly well-known novel。 Things like the POV of one scene being established as, for example, Peter, and then switching to, for example, Tanngnost for a paragraph or two, and then back to Peter with no established POV break。 Also quite a few continuity errors in regards to points of view and characters’ narrations。 For example, when the POV is in The Captain’s, Brom seems to establish that he’s using limited 3rd rather than omniscient 3rd by sticking to language/terminology the character would know, but then breaks that established rule and uses terminology that the character wouldn’t know。 This is most noticeable in the scenes that take place at the end of the novel, for obvious reasons。 My main gripe with the book, though, is that it doesn’t appear to have a coherent point。 When a book bills itself as horror and then employs an absurd amount of gore and assorted descriptions of psychological and physical tortures, especially when the characters being discussed are mostly children, and it appears as though there’s /supposed to be/ some sort of statement being made (considering the fact that it’s not marketed as, like, a slasher flick in book form), I expect said statement to be relatively clear, even if it takes a bit for the pieces to click into place either within the narrative itself or once the reader has finished absorbing what they’ve read。 The ending was more satisfying than I expected in terms of completing Peter’s arc, but there are so many conflicting statements being made here about the nature of religiosity, adulthood, childhood, war, love, morality, humanity, etc, that it’s not even a matter of “reader’s choice” on what meaning to take from it all。 The prose itself is simply confused by what it wants to say。 It’s not really saying anything, because it fails to finish its own thoughts at best and contradicts itself at worst。 I’m not sure if this is due to the limitations of the writer’s writing skills, or if the writer just didn’t have coherent thoughts on the majority of things he seemed keen to comment on。What I’m saying, I guess, is that I see so much potential in this story but it reads like a draft, not the final product。So many characters were left as loose threads too。 Nothing really feels complete or coherent here, but the parts that are there are very interesting and engaging, so I really wish there was more to this than there is。 And finally, I’m really not sure why the marketing for this book is so insistent on making Peter out to be a clear villain here。 Perhaps I’m just excessively lenient when it comes to morally grey characters, but nothing he did was particularly villainous in the grand scheme of the story, and none of his villainous acts were any worse than the average anti-hero’s。 I mean, you just really can’t frame a character as the villain in the dust jacket summary and then in the prologue have him rescue a little girl from being raped by her father? It doesn’t really accomplish what you seem to want it to accomplish。 Brom himself refers to both his Peter and the original Peter Pan as sociopathic, but I don’t particularly see that in The Child Thief。 Peter demonstrates a capacity for empathy and remorse in practically every scene he’s in。 He’s cold and calculating and manipulative, and gets caught up in the brutality of his environment easily, but he’s no more sociopathic for it than the average soldier? The argument here would be that it’s not Peter who views lives as expendable for his own desires, but “war is bad because it forces people to treat other people as expendable。”So I don’t know。 I liked this book, but not necessarily for what it is so much as what it could have been had any of the pieces it started to assemble been followed through on。 。。。more

Brom。 Oh you devilish author! To so capture me with this book, to the point of utter neglect of all my responsibilities! At first, I thought this book was going to give me a completely different version of Peter Pan。 In a way, it did, and yet still stuck to the original premise - seeking a mother's love, children loyal to Peter, a land where you'll never grow old。 But there was so much that was different。 I enjoyed that this was a dark twist on the original tale。 It wasn't a book that I "couldn't put down", but I still enjoyed the book in its entirety。 At first, I thought this book was going to give me a completely different version of Peter Pan。 In a way, it did, and yet still stuck to the original premise - seeking a mother's love, children loyal to Peter, a land where you'll never grow old。 But there was so much that was different。 I enjoyed that this was a dark twist on the original tale。 It wasn't a book that I "couldn't put down", but I still enjoyed the book in its entirety。 。。。more

A Peter Pan retelling that apparently is true to the original’s very dark tone。 Check for trigger warnings if you pay attention…that first chapter was unexpected。 I devoured this book and absolutely loved it。 Fantastic world building, characters and plot。 All of Brom’s other works are now on my TBR。

Beautiful and intricate。 I have a hard time sometimes piecing together what characters look like, and the author made each of his characters so unique and complex that I fell in love with not only his style of writing but drawing, as well。The ending fits the book, even though it may be bleak。 The bleakness of it just hits the final nail on the head, matching the rest of the book, reminding me of the ending to The Book of M。At the end of the day, the solemnity of this book hits home as you realize no child should ever have to endure anything these kids go through。 I think it makes a commentary on war, especially child soldiers, and kidnapping。I was reminded of The Call by Peadar O Guilin and The Chronicles of Narnia。 The Call is twisted by itself, but this takes it up a notch, and Narnia was nostalgic for me but at the same time horrific just because of all the adult themes we encounter。All in all, I want to check out more books by Brom, because he has left me dumbfounded by this glorious rendition of the classic Peter Pan。 。。。more

This did not work out。 I was really excited as I love a dark re-telling of classic tales but personally I wasn't a massive fan。I like a horror novel but this just wasn't for me just a personal preference。 One jarring complaint I had was that I didn't like how female characters were over-sexualised and their bodies constantly talked about。 I just felt uncomfortable。I do want to preface I understand it's meant to be uncomfortable and dark but it just personally didn't work for me and maybe it was This did not work out。 I was really excited as I love a dark re-telling of classic tales but personally I wasn't a massive fan。I like a horror novel but this just wasn't for me just a personal preference。 One jarring complaint I had was that I didn't like how female characters were over-sexualised and their bodies constantly talked about。 I just felt uncomfortable。I do want to preface I understand it's meant to be uncomfortable and dark but it just personally didn't work for me and maybe it was in fact to much for me as a reader。 。。。more

To be fair, I think I just don't give two fat shits about Peter Pan。 If this came out before the original I'd rate it higher, but great fan fiction only matters if you're a fan。 If you like Pan and you want the unadulterated version, then you'll probably think this is dope。 To be fair, I think I just don't give two fat shits about Peter Pan。 If this came out before the original I'd rate it higher, but great fan fiction only matters if you're a fan。 If you like Pan and you want the unadulterated version, then you'll probably think this is dope。 。。。more

Beyond anything I expected! I felt horrified, angry, sad, resigned, hopeful, and then I cried。 After finishing, I immediately knew I loved this version of Peter Pan more than any other possible variation。 He’s dark, bloodthirsty, and willful。Avalon instead of Neverland。 Devils instead of Lost Boys。Peter (mentally) maturing after lifetimes of gore。My only complaint was one reoccurring detail。 And what was that? A great retelling of Peter Pan。。。 Or is it? Peter Pan was always a flawed character in Barrie's version。 I love how Brom's Peter is depicted。 Wicked, with a contagious smile。 I wish his character's arc was a bit more developed, though。 I loved Nick with my whole heart。 He's a flawed character, but an interesting one。 His anger and his doubts were beautifully written。 His last scenes with Leroy made my heart ache。 I loved the lost children of Neverland, of course (well, Brom calls them "The Devil A great retelling of Peter Pan。。。 Or is it?
